The Federal Government has confirmed that the 2023 National Population and Housing Census will start on May 3. The announcement was made by Dr Garba Abari, a member of the Publicity and Advocacy Committee on the census, during a press conference in Abuja on Sunday.

The three-day exercise will take place across the country and will capture every person, household and structure for national planning and project execution purposes. The change in the date was due to the postponement of the 2023 gubernatorial and state house of assembly elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to Abari, the census and the 2023 elections are major national events with significant importance. They had been planned to hold not too far away from each other, but the postponement of the elections made it mandatory to adjust the date for the census.

The initial date of March 29 was put forward to April 2nd and is now scheduled for May 3rd to 5th.

The Director-General, National Orientation Agency (NOA), assured the public that the nation is ready to embark on the exercise. He described the census as a significant event that will aid in national planning and execution of developmental projects.

The census is important for development, planning, security, infrastructure development, education, health, and other demographic considerations. The preparations for the national census include training, sub-trainings, retraining, and the actual capture of the population. Download 2023 Census Manual Pdf
